What is the difference between a laptop, notebook & a netbook?

OK there is a catch laptops ARE note books however they were named so after a person from the US sued DELL..The case was pretty simple..She was using a Laptop on her Lap before it exploded causing burns to her legs...the court ruled the case in favour of the lady on a simple fact that LAPtops are meant to be used on LAPS...So they changed the name to notebook..Now netbook is very similar to a Tablet PC most of them have a touch screen with a basic operating system which helps you in getting onto the internet download pics and douments...

I guess almost everyone of you has an idea about what a Touch Tablet PC is but sometimes those concepts need to be explained better and I think the best way to describe a Touch Screen Tablet PC is by comparing it with laptops, the device it uses as a base to build upon this niche gadget.

Why is it a niche gadget? Firstly, because it's not something everybody would use or pay more than on a regular notebook/netbook. Basically a Tablet laptop is a more expensive Laptop that adds touchscreen capabilities for user input. But now let's take this matter in detail and compare a laptop and a touch screen tablet with the same specs like they were build by the same manufacturer and the only difference comes from the touch screen part.

Main differences between a touch enabler notebook PC and a normal laptop:

• Screen: it's thicker on a Tablet PC because of the additional layer (capacitive or resistive) and the electronics that control it and determine the user input precise location. Additionally the screen can pivot 180 degrees to allow a more comfortable use folded over the keyboard
• Stylus: a Touch tablet features a pretty big display, but precise actions from the user need a stylus, especially in applications like Adobe Photoshop
• Battery life: as touch screen tablets have more components than other laptops (the touch enabling layer over the display for example) the power consumption is slightly higher than on normal laptops so expect a shorter battery life away from the socket
• Software: this is maybe the biggest difference, as without proper software and programs to take good use of the touch capabilities of a Tablet PC there isn't much to do with one. This is also what Tablet PCs lack right now but maybe manufacturers will understand this and will try and offer customized apps for touch input.

Those I think are the most notable differences between a laptop and a touchscreen tablet PC. If you know more let me know in comments and I'll update it accordingly.

Battery Msi Wind

Buying an Net book (UMPC)?

Hi to all,

I just need an advise regarding my plan on buying a netbook anytime soon. But I'm still undecided on what to get. I'm contemplating among four:

Acer Aspire One 8GB - because its on cheap sale.

EEE PC 1000H - I really need an internal hard drive and a 6 Cell battery.

MSI WIND U90x - Cheap with internal hard drive but only with 3 cell battery.

Lenovo S10 - Could be my number one candidate - but the 3 cell battery is a lowdown. I would think twice.

Any additions and recommendations will be much appreciated.

I have one of this. Regretted buying it (screen size is too small, not enough vertical space). The touchpad buttons are also atrocious, because they are placed on the sides of the touchpad rather than at the bottom. The buttons are also incredibly stiff.
The only redeeming feature is the 120 GB hard disk.

Don't buy it/

EEE PC 1000H and the 1000 (note: There are 2 variants, the latter being the one without Windows preinstalled and only has a 8GB SSD drive)
It has a nice 10 inch screen, good for working on. Good battery life (6 cell). 80 GB hard disk (the 1000H model). However, it's a touch heavier than the Aspire One and slightly thicker.
I recommend this one.

MSI WIND U90x
Downright disappointing battery life. I once rented this netbook from Retravision during my travels to test it out. The battery lasts only 2 hours using WiFi internet. It has Wireless N and has a large keyboard.
However, there is a version which comes with a 6 cell battery. Get this if you can.

Lenovo S10
It comes with a ExpressCard slot, which is great if you want to add in an aftermarket add-on like a mobile broadband modem for wireless internet. Also comes with a generous 160 GB HDD, Wireless N and Bluetooth. Full size keyboard.
However, it only has 2 USB slots, and the battery life is also quite poor.

What notebook/laptop computers besides Macs and Alienware have available back lit keyboards?

I need a new notebook mainly for work (office documents, email, web-authoring and photo editing). Because I travel I want it to have some entertainment capability (light gaming, and watching Hi Def content) but still be relatively portable (under 8 pounds). Does anyone know of a PC notebook manufacturer that offers a back lit keyboard, Blue Ray drive, TV tuner, and hdmi output in a 15.4 to 17 inch platform?

The Dell XPS series also meets those requirements. Then again, Alienware is owned by Dell too.
