i have a thinkpad 600e and fitted a dvd rom but it will not allow me to change region code from 1 to 2 help?

i can not get the dvd player that ibm used to supply as is it no longer available. It recognises cds but not dvdsand it will not allow me to change the region . can any one help ?

Try there altho once you have changed the firmware on a cd drive of any description you cannot change it back. But hey it will change the region code

My computer doesn't understand when stuff is plugged into its USB ports... what's up with that?

I have a really old IBM laptop (it's a 'Thinkpad' if that helps) & for some reason it randomly has stopped understanding when various items are plugged into its USB ports. I have a Canon DSLR & it used to work fine when I plugged it in, but now when it IS plugged in (& all the cords are secure & not loose) the computer says that I need to plug in the camera for it to work. This transition happened randomly. It also applies to a new external hard drive & card reader. I'll try to install the driver to the card reader & the computer will tell me that in order for installation to continue I need to plug in the card reader, even though it's already plugged in.

Automated System Recovery (ASR) is a Windows tool used to simplify recovery of a server's system or boot volumes. ASR consists of two parts: an automated backup and an automated restore. The backup portion can be accessed in the Backup utility under System Tools.

Users can access it through the Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard located in Backup. The ASR Preparation Wizard backs up the System State data, system services, and all disks associated with the operating system components. It also creates a floppy disk, which contains information about the backup, the disk configurations, and how to accomplish a restore.

Microsoft
Windows Vista SP1 Automated System Recovery was released in February last year.

The ASR is one of the aspects in Windows Vista that has been evolved with the introduction of Vista Service Pack-1. A Windows application programming interface, ASR is designed to keep track of and record the configuration of disks and volumes on a system. It will also manage disks in accordance with Critical and non-Critical labels, depending on whether they do or do not contain system state or operating system components.

With Windows Vista SP1, Microsoft has introduced supports for the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI). As such the ASR in both Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 was tweaked in order to be capable of recovering EFI system partitions in a bare metal recovery.

IBM
IBM-Tivoli is ASR in static IP environments using Tivoli Storage Manager was introduced in November last year.

The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Automated System Recovery Process supports Networks that are DHCP enabled. In networks that do not support DHCP and uses Static IP's, the local backup sets are used to recover these systems in case of a crash or total failure.

ASR is used to recover Microsoft Windows Server system in the event of a catastrophic system or hardware failure. The goal of ASR process is to return the operating system to the point of last backup. It is a two-phase process.

    * Microsoft Windows installs a temporary operating system image using the original operating system media.
    * Windows invokes TSM to restore the system volume and system state information.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) interfaces with Microsoft Windows to provide system recovery.

Hewlett Packard
HP Blade PC Automated System Recovery Utility 2.00 Rev. E description was introduced earlier this year.

This package contains the Automated System Recovery (ASR-2) Service for the supported desktop models and operating systems. The ASR-2 service causes an HP Blade PC that has stopped responding (locked up), or that has experienced a "blue-screen" error, to restart (reboot), bringing it back online and making it available for network users.

Development includes the modification of the installation script to add support for 64-bit Microsoft Windows Operating Systems (Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista).

Conclusion
ASR does not backup user's files or other data, it should be used only as a last resort because in preparation for a restore ASR will format the system and boot volumes of the hard-drive, making other, less drastic recovery methods impossible.

How do I fix the sound on my IBM thinkpad (R51)?!?

I have a second-hand IBM thinkpad (R51) and everything is working great but the sound. I do NOT know much about re-programming computers or anything and have only found confusing answers online. Can anyone give me a simple way to get my sound back (I do know that it did work at one point)? Please and thanks.

Can I use the ac adapter that came with compaq nc6220 for compaq n600 ?

The adapter is 18.5v/3.5 amps. Spec for evo n600 is 18.5/2.7 amps.
I believe the voltage is the one that matters. I don't want to toast
my laptop.

There are many great mini laptops to choose from, but I will review only four of them in this article: The HP Mini 5101, The Asus Eee PC 1005HA, the Toshiba Mini NB205-210, and the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 are all among the top-rated mini laptops.

The HP Mini 5101 is a business-class netbook, priced around $425. The sturdy design makes for a great travel companion. The chassis is an all-black body, and has a bulging battery under the laptop instead of poking out of the back. The weight is about 3 pounds, which is about average for the minis. The keyboard is 95% full-size, making it extremely comfortable to type on. The touchpad is a bit small, but the buttons are below, which I find more comfortable to work with. The sound was nice and balanced, and lyrics were audible at average volume. The display was visible from both horizontal and vertical angles. This netbook is highly rated among consumers, and I recommend it as well.

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA costs around $400 with an Intel Atom processor, 1 GB RAM, Windows XP and 160 GB hard disk. The battery life is a raging 9 hours, which is a major plus. The Asus is a bit thick and heavy. With the adapter, the mini weighs 3.4 pounds. The keyboard I found a bit hard to type on compared to the HP above. There are no spaces between the keys, and the flat layout makes it harder to type on than the raised keyboards. The multifunction mousepad is very useful. You can zoom in on pages, scroll, click, all with two fingers. The display is colorful and bright, but the viewing angles leaves a bit to be desired. The speakers were a bit tinny. Though this isn't my favorite mini, it is a strong competitor.

The Toshiba Mini NB205-210 is for the budget conscious, coming in at $350. You can get the $400 version, but the extra $50 will only get you more aesthetics and no more in performance. The battery ranks the longest life with a crushing 9.5 hours. The weight is average at 3.4 pounds with the adapter. The design is a bit thick. The keyboard is comfortable to type on, and the touchpad is large, which is another plus. The LED backlit display is nice and bright with good viewing angles both horizontally and vertically. The audio is where this laptop falls a bit, lacking in both clarity and volume.

Last but not least is the Dell Inspiron Mini 10, ranging in price from $300 to $575 for the top model with tv tuner and high resolution screen. This model is slim in design, weighing the average 3.4 pounds with the adapter included. The keyboard is 97% full-size and comfortable to type on. The touchpad is multifunction, which is always a plus.

With so many mini laptops to choose from, you are bound to find the perfect one for you. Just make sure you do the proper research to make sure there are no unpleasant surprises.

Notebooks are becoming an essential mobile accessory thanks to their easy portability and connectivity facility. Mini notebooks can do what any other laptop or desktop can do. Rapid response time and ease of program modification are important advantages. No doubt notebooks provide better visual experience, but at close to seven pounds, it could also be the cause of a bad back. Mini notebooks lower the heavy load strain common to conventional notebooks. Weighing around 2.6 pounds, these mini notebooks can still easily fit in a backpack or large handbag. Mini notebooks consume less power and as a result the heat generated is also low as compared to desktops or big notebooks. The radiation generated is also considerably lower. This is another advantage of mini notebooks.

However, mini notebooks do have its share of deficiency. The small screen might be a problem for some people. IBM Thinkpad 770 power on problem.?

Ok I purchased this computer for working in Dos related programs. Anyway the computer powers up and eventually ends up on a screen with an "O" with "off" under it. Then a greater sign ">", then a line with "on".
So it looks like this " O > I ". What in the wide world of sports is this. I have replaced the CMOS battery already. The old one was dead dead dead. Did the changing of the date and time thing. Now it goes to this screen and now what? None of the keyboard keys do anything. The power button just turns it off and it ends up on the same screen.

This sounds more like a hardware problem, the I > O you described probably would mean an "Input - Output" problems.

Do this simple diagnostics.

Take out the RAM, and replace them (you should do a swap of positions if you have more than one RAM in the slots) You can also do the tests using a single RAM or trying a different RAM entirely.

If this doesn't resolve it, then try taking out the processor and replace it.

Does the processor function when you switch the machine on? You can know this by checking that the CPU fan is working when the machine is switched on.

If this doesn't solve the problem, then you need to see a qualified technician for assistance.

I had a similar problem with my IBM Thinkpad, and this procedure did the magic.

Laptop question?

I have an IBM X41 Tablet and I have two 8 cell batteries for it. They worked one time each and now when they are plugged in it says 99% available (plugged in, not charging). When I take the power cord out the computer shuts off, and the battery has no power. Can I test the batteries or anything? Or what can I do. Please help!!

This does not just happen to IBM's it happens to all laptops old batteries seem to just go bad and you should look to switching out. There is a trick though that might give you a few more weeks with your batteries but you may only get 30 min a charge. What you do is charge the batteries then let them die 5 times then stick them in the freezer over night and then let them get back to room temp. then charge them back up and wala you have limited batterie life. I did this for my Hp that was 7 years old and it gave me 30 min of life for a few extra weeks while I found a new replacement. Hopefuly it will work better for you.

Using power efficient Centrino chips, proprietary hard disks and optical drives that automatically shut down when not in use, these companies can lay claim to having better battery lives for their laptops. But they are not the result of better battery technologies. The rush to find new and better alternative batteries remains a challenge.

Micro Fuel Cells

What seems like a sleepy battery landscape may change soon with the introduction of micro fuel cells. The new type of battery technology promises higher energy levels that can last over longer times. We're not talking about just lasting 8 hours but more like a tenfold increase in battery life that we have today. That's roughly 50 hours. Imagine if laptops can stay on for 2-3 days on a single charge. The competitive marketing opportunities are immense. Micro fuel cells are expected to apply not only to laptops but to other mobile gadgets like cellphones and gaming handsets.

Todate more that 60 companies including IBM, Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo, Panasonic and Motorola are competing to develop and commercialize the micro fuel cell battery. Some of these companies are shifting their focus to new technologies to recharge fuel cells without relying on electricity. New York-based Medis technologies, for instance, has developed a disposable Power Pack that it claims can power cell phones for up to 20 hours or recharge them 5 to 6 times before getting disposed.

Micro fuel cells will still take a few more year to become commercially available in the market. This will certainly boost laptops sales further. This is a multi-billion dollar industry once it reaches the same maturity level as lithium based batteries. GP
