A New Breakthrough

The Intel Centrino 2 processor technology family represents the most significant advancement in mobility since the original launch of Intel Centrino processor technology in 2003. Essentially a marketing term, Centrino 2 is used to describe a raft of new technologies including: a handful of new Core 2 Duo processors; a new chipset with a faster front-side bus; a new graphics solution with support for high-definition content and switchable graphics; and updated wireless and wired connectivity. With laptops based on this new technology, you'll experience a breakthrough on all five vectors of mobility:

These computers are equipped to handle everything from robust business to masterful media—and everything in between. Intel Centrino 2 processor technology also includes advancements designed to enhance the mobility experience for both consumer and business users. Both feature a 1066 MHz FSB, high clock speeds, faster DDR2 (800 MHz) compared to the prior generation, as well as DDR3 support (up to 1066 MHz).

So what does this mean for you? In this article, we'll describe the new features and benefits of this advanced technology.

New processors: The processors launching with the new platform are built on the same 45nm Penryn architecture that debuted earlier this year, though the new chips now support the faster 1066MHz front-side bus.

Three of the processors are part of a new class of energy-efficient CPUs designed to enhance battery life, and they are designated with a part number "Pxxx" (think P for "power optimized"). These Penryn chips support a range of power-saving capabilities, from selectively shutting down unused parts of the chip, to a deeper-sleep mode, which allows the laptop to use a negligible amount of power when in standby mode. The energy-efficient CPUs have the added advantage of staying cooler than their more power-hungry counterparts, a development that should bring about even smaller, thinner laptops.

The remaining processors (part number "Txxx" and "Xxxx") prioritize performance. All six processors are priced as follows:

Enhanced network connections: For wireless modules, the platform will include Wi-Fi support with the option of using a WiMax add-on card (both options support the 802.11n standard). With the new wireless add-on card, you'll be able to roam up to twice as far as you could with the company's previous Wi-Fi chip. Intel is heavily marketing WiMax as the high-speed wireless broadband service of the future for laptops and smaller computing gadgets.

On the wired side, support for high-speed Gigabit Ethernet—a feature that's likely to appeal to business users—is standard with Centrino 2.

Faster overall performance: The new Mobile Intel 45 Express chipset increases the frequency of the front-side bus to 1,066MHz, which helps all the components of the system communicate more quickly. It also supports DDR3 memory, which has a higher peak throughput than previous memory technologies. Intel is always reluctant to quantify performance improvements, but company representatives have promised "dramatic" performance gains.

Personal Users

On top of these native components, the Intel Centrino 2 processor technology family adds additional features for consumers. For starters, the system comes equipped with Blu-ray logo-capable playback so you can enjoy your HD movies on-the-go. Another big development available on Intel Centrino 2-based laptops is switchable graphics, which is supported by a new 45 chipset. Intel claims that the mobile GM45 express chipset (pictured below) offers 70% greater performance than its predecessor.

Switchable graphics provides both integrated and discrete graphics on a single notebook, enabling users to easily switch between the two options. This feature, which can be either user-controlled or automatic, delivers greater 3-D performance when needed while providing the option for greater power savings.

Business Users

For businesses, Intel Centrino 2 with vPro technology features built-in maintenance capabilities and enhanced security options that readily integrate with software management solutions. Designed to lower IT costs and improve IT efficiency, Intel Centrino 2 with vPro technology offers a unified approach for administering and protecting computers throughout your organization. With the latest IT management consoles, you can monitor and maintain your laptops over a wired or secure wireless network. Plus, you'll have the ability to deploy patches and updates from anywhere, even if the client computer is powered off. This is increasingly important as companies replace desktops with laptops and need to remotely diagnose, update and repair systems over a wireless network. 

Conclusion

Overall, Centrino 2 has all the hallmarks of a sure-fire hit. Every component of the platform has seen at least modest enhancements designed to increase performance, decrease power consumption, and add functionality. And while it's too early to speak in general terms, our preliminary findings seem to back up at least some of Intel's claims.

We've uncovered something special, something we've not seen the likes of since the   original Slot-1 Celeron C300A of yore, something wonderful. No, it's not full of stars, but it is full of silicon. We've uncovered the latest Intel budget dual-core processor and by Jove, it overclocks more crazily than a supermodel on an economy class flight.

On first impressions, the E7200 seems unremarkable, other than a bargain. Running at a stock 2.53GHz on a 1,066MHz FSB it's built on a 45nm process with 3MB L2 cache and can be snapped up for around $l20. That alone makes it the best value Core 2 on the market. But hang on, this is built on the new 45nm process, which means it'll run very cool and with CPUs already running at 3.2GHz on the same process just how fast will this boy run?

Even under normal settings the performance is impressive with it running at 30°C just passively cooled with a cheap $15 cooler. Under load this rises to 50°C, but even that is more than acceptable for day-to-day work and incredible for passive cooling. Feeling brave we initially went straight for 3.2GHz running on a 337MHz FSB and even with the stock cooler we got a stable overclock.

Taking the FSB up to 350MHz showed the first signs of strain. It would boot into Vista, but bluescreen shortly after or during benchmarking. Switching to the Akasa Blue Aurora soon sorted that problem out and once again we were stable, running at 3.33GHz. That's 800MHz or 30 per cent faster. It was, unfortunately, at this point our fun ran out, as beyond 350MHz our chosen motherboard, a budget ASUS P5LD2-X/1333 'lost' all the SATA hard drives. Even then it was happy to boot to the BIOS at up to a 390MHz FSB (3.7GHz) on the stock core voltage. Proving there's a lot of overclocking territory left to discover with this beauty.

Overclocking the processor is all about pushing up the front side bus speed. This not only affects the processor, but the memory speed. While many motherboards do enable you to 'clock-down' the memory bus it's always helpful to have performance memory parts installed, alongside your processor and performance cooler.

The first step to good overclocking has nothing to do with settings or indeed your hardware: it's to make sure you install your cooler correctly. That means don't overdo the thermal grease. A micron-thin film is all that's required, place a few blobs, push the heatsink on, remove it, wipe clean and then install it for a better contact. Of course, the BIOS is at the heart of overclocking, while Windows-based tools have somewhat alleviated the need for it, frankly this is still where the real work has to be done. An overclocking motherboard will, of course, greatly help as it will provide better recovery tools and more advanced tweaking options.

Should i get a Toshiba A300D/01J 15 INCH NOTEBOOK?

Hi, i am currently deciding whether to purchase the following laptop: Toshiba A300D/01J 15 INCH NOTEBOOK . I need it for university but also would like it for music purposes, so needs good sound and good playback of video's, movies. Also would like it to burn cd's ect..
I can't find any reviews on the laptop, i dunno if its an older edition or not. It retails for $1086.00 but i can get it at a cost price 4 $846 thanx to a mate of mine. Features include:

For that price, you should get a better processor (Core 2 by Intel is much better than AMD mobile processors, generally speaking), a better video card (a 3100 is pretty low) and most laptops around that price come with 3-4 gigs of memory. Every laptop these days has wireless

What is the best case for my 13" white macbook?

i'm a student and i just got a white macbook. i need a case i can carry it in with a good amount of padding and protection. i also like something slim enough that i might be able to stuff in my bakpack. also, i don't like black and bland. something with a little style so to say. i saw the brenthaven eclipse sleeve and it sound really good the only drawback is it doesn't have a shoulder strap so i don't end up snapping my fingers off if i dont have another bag to carry it in.

Considering that "Black Friday" is near and I am in the market for a new laptop, I am wondering what brand would give me the most options (Specs) for my money? I hear the company is Acer is good, but i don't know. Lately, I have been hearing about Sony, Toshiba, and HP...batteries heating up, thus resulting in recalls. Any suggestions??? I was looking for a new laptop, because when my father was in Mexico, a laptop / notebook was stolen! I was very disappointed, so I decided to give my laptop to it without your knowledge. I was this laptop very nice and small, but the Intel Atom, and who knows what is best. Intel Atom or Intel Core Duo?

Intel Core Duo processor is better Intel Atom is designed specifically for netbooks due to the fact that they are small, produce very little heat, and battery are very environment. I am sure that when we speak of "better" the criteria mean is speed.

How much will it cost to have the power jack repaired on my laptop?

It's a fujitsu-thanks!

That depends on if it can be repaired. The soldered connection to the mother board has broken. I have fixed this with some success by taking the laptop apart and re soldering the connection.

This may or may not work depending on how bad it's broken loose and how good the person doing the repair is.

If it can't be repaired the mother board would have to be replaced, if under warranty then great. If not it would probably cost you the same as a new laptop. But check with Fujitsu.

If you do have someone try and repair it make sure the are a professional and good at electronic circuit board repair.

As far as cost to repair you would have to check in your area, but it would probably be worth fixing if it can be re-soldered.

Bummer it's a common problem with many laptops. (:

Black jack is one of the most widely played card games in the world today. In fact, every casino, whether on the soil or in cyberspace, list the game as one of their most popular games available.

But for anyone that wants to know further, the history of blackjack can be quite as interesting as the game itself. While not being directly crucial to the individual game, you can still get a few insights on the game and further appreciate it as well.

Blackjack has its origins in the country of France, it emerged roughly during the seventeenth century. The first prototype of the game is believed to be the game "vingt-et-un" (literally as twenty and one in French), which was popular in France during that century. It is also believed that the game is itself derived from other French card games which involved strategic calculations and betting.

The game was the introduced into other countries in Europe, which enthusiastically accepted it. Various names were adapted by different countries for the game. The English name for the game itself was derived from the French version of the game, where there are instances where a player can draw the Jack of spades and the Jack of clubs at the same time, hence black jacks.

Blackjack entered the United States gaming scene soon after the French revolution, where it was received well. The entry of the game in the US was marked by a time when there are no strict gambling regulations set forth yet in the nineteenth century. Thus many professional gamblers saw the opportunity provided by blackjack, which also led to its rise in popularity.

At the turn of the century however, the US government began enforcing stricter gambling regulations to curb the rise of rampant illegal activities. In 1910, the state of Nevada declared gambling, including blackjack playing, as a criminal activity. This greatly hurt the then fledgling Las Vegas gaming industry.

During later years, however, the government subsequently softened its stand against gambling and begun legalizing gaming activities. Legislation was also then set forth to oversee operations and protect the rights of players as well as the industry itself. With the more relaxed setup, the game of blackjack also experienced a great deal of renewed interest from players.

During the fifties, the game experienced yet another great development, as some renown mathematicians began detailed analysis of the game. A large volume of academic studies detailing the mathematical complexities of the game were published during that time, which led to even more interest in the game.

Development went further when players used these studies to formulate game strategies that they can use. This led to the introduction of basic strategies and blackjack card counting techniques which are widely used by players today.
