I have a Toshiba Satellite and it wont charge...i have to press the charge thing really hard for it to actually charge but i cant hold it much longer. It's been kind of broken for the past weeks but now it wont charge at all...
How can I fix it? I know its the powerjack because its lose...
and i believe i dont have warranty anymore.
Someone please help, i have about 20 minutes before my computer shuts down.
Loose DC power jack? You have four options, the way I see it.
1.Take it to a computer shop, or send it to one that repairs DC jacks. $125 to $150 bucks later, you're back in business.
2.Learn how to disassemble your laptop, solder the lug/s on the DC power jack yourself. (Usually it's the Positive lug that's come loose.) $30 to $40 bucks depending on what tools you need, (Read on), and the satisfaction of finding out that it doesn't take a 'rocket scientist' to do this.
3.Sell the laptop, (Ebay?), and use the money towards another one.
4.Give up, and throw it away.
Should you decide it's worth it to try, and fix it yourself, (Or the cost of having it fixed, or buying another one, is not in your budget), then read on.
A. The first thing is to learn how to disassemble your laptop.
Disassemble it, and be able to put it back together! Along with this you'll need to be acquainted with Static issues. Your
body carries around unseen static. Static 'kills' computer parts. It's no big deal really, you just need to be aware, and
use precautions.
Repair your laptop on top of a table. Many people seem to think they can do this on their bed, the couch, or directly on a carpet floor. No! Static! Since you won't have a solder table for this venture, it's best to protect the surface of your table. I
suggest using a thin piece of plywood,(1/4" thick is fine), on top of an old table cover. 2 feet by 2 feet square in size, should be sufficient.
Buy an ESD wriststrap. Average cost is anywhere from $4 bucks to $10 bucks. RadioShack has them in the US. Lot's
of other places do also, as well as online. Attach the ESD wriststrap, to the wrist of the opposite hand that you are best with. Example: Right-handed? Attach it to your left wrist. Attach the alligator clip to a metal object made of iron, or steel, that you can set on the table. Doesn't have to be a large object. Even a metal fork can do the job. (Metal legs on the table? See if you can attach it there.) I use an old desktop computer case, and attach it to the metal frame. Don't attach it to one that's plugged into an AC source! You don't need this much of a ground source. It's unwarranted.
Plus you don't need to be plugged anywhere near AC! (Some techs think they need to use the ground source of an AC outlet. I always ask 'em, what happens when it's lightning outside? No thanks!)
I suggest using a clean old egg carton for the screws you'll take out. Write on each egg holder where the screws came out of. Each section. I also suggest using a digital camera if available. Take well lighted, detailed photos, step by step. This will be a record for you to refer back to. (It's just for you, do it anyway YOU want.)
Here are some web links with info on disassembling a few laptops. It would be nice to have THE laptop Service and Maintenance Manual for yours. You may find one in the accompanying links.
1.Toshiba Satellite Service and Maintenance Manuals.
(Tip: Most Toshiba screws are marked next to the screw, on the laptop plastic cover with their size.)
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/
Should you not find the exact Toshiba model, click on a model number close to yours. One that says 'Take laptop apart', or 'Complete laptop disassembly', or 'Replace processor'. (To replace a processor you have to take the laptop apart pretty far.) After viewing a few guides you'll see
all Toshiba laptops generally come apart the same way. They differ a little, but not by much.
Tools I recommend:
1.Soldering Gun: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2911246&cp=2032058.2032236.2032313&parentPage=family
This is from RadioShack. It's a battery powered soldering gun for $20 bucks. Don't let the name 'battery power' fool ya'!
These work well!
2.Desoldering Tool: Slang term is a 'Solder Sucker'. This is the term techs mostly use. $10 bucks.
3.Solder: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062715&cp=2032058.2032236.2032313&parentPage=family
$10 bucks. You need .032 (About a 32nd of an inch), diameter solder. Wear some tight rubber gloves,(Like real tight dishwashing gloves), and do your soldering in a WELL ventilated area. Solder contains lead. I don't wear gloves, and use a small fan, with open windows,(When available. depends on the time of the year. Otherwise the central air's on.) I don't recommend this for you, however. I want you to be as safe as possible!
4.Isopropyl alcohol: Used for cleaning the solder area. Recommended is 99% alcohol. Finding 99% is TOUGH! I have a hard time finding 70%! I suggest using a capful,(Alcohol bottle cap size), in a suitable small container, and closing the alcohol bottle back up. Nothing SHOULD happen with the bottle open, but let's just rule it out of the way. Set the bottle way away from your work area. IF,( And it's very remote! Just want to observe any safety issue there may be!), the alcohol should catch on fire, it's just a small capful.
(Battery powered soldering gun makes this even MORE remote! Just covering all bases.)
5.Old toothbrush. Needed with the alcohol to clean the gunk left behind when you remove solder.
Actual procedure for soldering the DC jacks lug/s back into a stable position.

Should you find the motherboard is broken,(Maybe. From your description it doesn't sound like it.), you can solder wire leads in a cable to where the DC power jack goes. Hangs out of your laptop, and doesn't look very pretty, but it's functional! lol!

While both services allow you to make local and long distance phone calls using just your home telephone, there are some differences you'll want to consider before making your final decision on which type to go with for your home phone line. Both have pros and cons, so it will ultimately be up to you which will work out best for you and your family's needs.
Landline phone service
This is just your typical run of the mill telephone service. The same kind your grandparents used, and probably still use. Most elderly people are comfortable with landline, because they've always used it, and they like to stick with what they know works. Landlines are generally thought of as the regular old phone service where you just plug the phone cord into the wall jack, but these days you can even do that with some digital phone services.
Digital Phone Service
This is a marketing tactic used by cable operators to get around the idea of using Internet telephone, or VoIP. Digital, after all sounds much safer, and the not so tech savvy are more inclined to use it. Digital phone is in fact just VoIP (voice over IP). It uses your Internet connection to send and receive phone calls, but you don't need a computer, or even any software. Just a regular home phone will do. This is a point cable providers have had a hard time getting across.
Benefits of Landline Phone
In two words; Old reliable. One time tested benefit that make consumers decide to keep their landline is its reliability. If your electricity goes out, your landline will still be able to make and receive phone calls. Rememer the blackout of 2003? Cell phones didn't work, and neither did digital phone. The only way you could make a call was through a landline. Another benefit is 911 service. Even if you don't have phone service you can still call 911 in some states. This is known as a soft dial tone.
Benefits of Digital Phone
The reason more and more people are signing up for digital phone service is more often than not, price. It's cheap. Dirt cheap, in fact. One way to spot a digital phone provider is their use of the word voice when describing the product. If it says voice, it's digital. With voice plans you'll often get unlimited local and long distance calling at a flat rate, and for a fraction of the cost you might get from a landline provider. You'll also get triple the calling features like call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID, and voice mail for no extra cost.
Choosing a Plan
It mainly comes down to cost versus reliability. If you need cheap phone service, and aren't too worried about your power going out you may be a candidate for a digital line. On the other hand, if you need to rely on services such as 911 in an emergency, and don't want to worry about whether or not your phone is going to work when you need to make that call, a landline may be worth a little extra cost to have that security. There are ways to save on landline though. Bundling for example, but that's another article.
