Does keeping a laptop with a lithium-ion battery always plugged in hurt the battery?

I know lithium-ion batteries run for a certain amount of charge-discharge cycles, but I don't know if any cycles occur while the battery is fully charged and plugged in.

According to Toshiba you should at least once a month run the battery down and recharge. The new batteries are not bad at setting a memory by not running completely down as with the older types.
