Laptop wireless seems to be disabling internet?

When I open my laptop to get a wireless connection, it seems to disable my dsl modem. Even the hardwired computer I have hooked up to the modem loses connectivity to the internet? What could be the issue? It is a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista. Thanks.
