Why does my Sony Vaio battery have to be charged after 30 mins?

After I take it off it's power line, the battery appears at 46% in less than 5 mintues. In 30 minutes, the battery life is at 4% and has to be plugged in.

What is the point of a laptop if I can't use it away from my desk?

Is there anything I should do differently to extend the battery life? Or do I just need to buy a new battery for the computer?

You could extend the battery life, but only for a short while. And to do that, you'd have to sacrifice performance. I would suggest getting a new battery from Sony, as the symptoms show yours is bad. My laptop would stay unplugged for 3 minutes before running out of power. We ordered a new battery and now it stays for hours. If your laptop is still under warranty, you can contact Sony and get a new battery (probably for free) at http://eservice.sony.com/webrma/web/index.do. If you're not under warranty, you can go to http://www.laptopbatteries.com/sony-vaio-batteries/ and get a battery. You could also order the battery from sony.com, but I found their website confusing to find the Vaio's battery.

P.S. Although I don't recommend it, you could change your processor settings for a few minutes worth more of power. Just let me know if you'd like to know how.
