I am looking at getting a T400 because of its battery life, size, performance with a graphics card. Are there any computers on the market that even come close to competing with the T400 in specs? Anything that I should consider before buying?

Automated System Recovery (ASR) is a Windows tool used to simplify recovery of a server's system or boot volumes. ASR consists of two parts: an automated backup and an automated restore. The backup portion can be accessed in the Backup utility under System Tools.

Users can access it through the Automated System Recovery Preparation Wizard located in Backup. The ASR Preparation Wizard backs up the System State data, system services, and all disks associated with the operating system components. It also creates a floppy disk, which contains information about the backup, the disk configurations, and how to accomplish a restore.

Latest efforts from the software giants

Microsoft
Windows Vista SP1 Automated System Recovery was released in February last year.

The ASR is one of the aspects in Windows Vista that has been evolved with the introduction of Vista Service Pack-1. A Windows application programming interface, ASR is designed to keep track of and record the configuration of disks and volumes on a system. It will also manage disks in accordance with Critical and non-Critical labels, depending on whether they do or do not contain system state or operating system components.

With Windows Vista SP1, Microsoft has introduced supports for the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI). As such the ASR in both Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 was tweaked in order to be capable of recovering EFI system partitions in a bare metal recovery.

IBM
IBM-Tivoli is ASR in static IP environments using Tivoli Storage Manager was introduced in November last year.

The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Automated System Recovery Process supports Networks that are DHCP enabled. In networks that do not support DHCP and uses Static IP's, the local backup sets are used to recover these systems in case of a crash or total failure.

ASR is used to recover Microsoft Windows Server system in the event of a catastrophic system or hardware failure. The goal of ASR process is to return the operating system to the point of last backup. It is a two-phase process.

    * Microsoft Windows installs a temporary operating system image using the original operating system media.
    * Windows invokes TSM to restore the system volume and system state information.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) interfaces with Microsoft Windows to provide system recovery.

Hewlett Packard
HP Blade PC Automated System Recovery Utility 2.00 Rev. E description was introduced earlier this year.

This package contains the Automated System Recovery (ASR-2) Service for the supported desktop models and operating systems. The ASR-2 service causes an HP Blade PC that has stopped responding (locked up), or that has experienced a "blue-screen" error, to restart (reboot), bringing it back online and making it available for network users.

Development includes the modification of the installation script to add support for 64-bit Microsoft Windows Operating Systems (Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows Vista).

Conclusion
ASR does not backup user's files or other data, it should be used only as a last resort because in preparation for a restore ASR will format the system and boot volumes of the hard-drive, making other, less drastic recovery methods impossible.

Dvd Rom

i want to install dvd rom in my desktop which has cd writer?

cd writer is already in my pc now i want to add dvd rom along with cd writer.what settings do i have to change?

No settings actually on windows need to be changed.
But, to ensure it all works correctly you should make sure the 'Jumper' is configured correctly.
On the back of the drive you should see some pins next to where the main ide lead goes in.
They probably have a couple of plastic things to connect 2 together.
1. Choose which drive you want to be 'Primary' and which 'Slave'
2. Set the Jumper correctly on BOTH drives, a diagram should be on the drive somewhere to show you how to do this.
Here is an example diagram of what jumpers look like:

3. Put them in, and make sure the 'Primary' and 'Slave' leads go to the correct drive.
4. When you boot up, your bios will re-configure your system and it's all done.
Oh ye and Slave maybe called 'Secondary' on some devices and Primary maybe called 'Master'.

The following guide is going to show you how to rip DVD's to all sorts of video and audio formats on Mac OS X (including Snow Leopard) using iSkysoft DVD Ripper for Mac http://www.softdiggs.com/mac-dvd-ripper-isky.php . It also shows several tips and tricks you need to pay attention to while using this Mac DVD Ripper to rip DVD on your Mac machine.

Step 1. Launch iSkysoft DVD Ripper for Mac and add DVD Movie

Click the "Load DVD" button, and navigate to the DVD folder of the movie you want to add from your hard disc or DVD-ROM, open DVD folder, select VIDEO_TS folder and click OK.

This allows you to merge all movie titles into one output file so that you can enjoy a long movie without breaks.

To many people connecting their laptop to a TV can be a bit daunting but there is no need for it to be so. Probably the hardest part is figuring out what connections they have available on their TV and laptop then getting a suitable laptop to TV cable.

Here we will offer some advice in working out what connection options you have, while we can't come into your home and tell you we can describe what connections there are and offer some pointers for each one.

Older equipment / non high definition will often use one of the following cables:

RCA cables or sometimes known as Phono leads were very common a few years ago using three round coloured connectors and used to transmit analogue data. The three connectors are yellow for video, white for the left channel audio and red for right channel audio.

S-Video cables or Super Video is still popular and consists of a round connector with between 4 and 7 pins for the video signal and two audio cables for the left and right audio channels the same as RCA.

Scart Cables are rectangular in shape and have 21 pins in two horizontal rows. Commonly used on European TV's and are capable of transferring both audio and video signals in standard definition. Now of course they are outdated and if your equipment is modern it is unlikely to use them.

VGA cables commonly used on older laptops and desktop computers and are a 15 pin connector and have a rounded rectangle shape. The VGA cable is only capable of transferring video information for audio you will normally have to use RCA type cables.

More modern equipment such as digital and high definition will most likely use one of the following:

DVI cables are rectangular in shape and have three horizontal rows of 8 pins giving a total of 24 pins. These were the standard connector for digital video until recently with the advent of newer and faster technologies.

HDMI Cable is now the standard for digital connections and used for watching HD TV etc... They are rectangular in shape and about half the size of a DVI connector having only 19 pins in the connection. One of the advantages of these is that they can transfer both digital audio and video.

DisplayPort Cables have been specifically developed for connecting computers to their displays and to home entertainment systems and allowing the transfer of High definition data both audio and video.

Once you have figured out what connections you have available to connect a laptop to a TV you can take a look at what options are available. Don't worry if your laptop and TV don't have the same connections types as there are a number of ways of converting one to another available. A good cable & lead supplier will normally be able to offer you advice if you are still unsure what you need to get the job done.

It is a Sony Vaio PCG-K13. it has a 2.8ghz processor, wifi,dvd,cd-r, 512 ram, 40gig hdd. It still runs fast and its pretty much in new condition except a small scratch on the outer shell. Im in no rush i just want another one that i seen.

1. What is MP4 video?

how long does it take to set up the dell studio XPS 13?

im getting the dell studio XPS 13 for my birthday and it should be here next thursday on the 8th. how long does it take to set it up? also will it play the sims 3 well? i love that game but am unsure how the laptop will play it.

Initial set up should be around 45 minutes.
It should play Sims 3, unless you have purchased the Ubuntu Linux version of the Dell.
