How can I get an Acer Aspire One to the screen in a bigger monitor ...?

Connect an IBM flat screen 15 inch monitor to VGA port on my Acer Aspire One laptop FG because I thought that's all I had to do to see pictures of the laptop on a bigger screen, but it is proving more complicated than the flat screen makes reading "Outside the range limit" ... what can I do?
