What's your budget? $1000-1500, or $1500-2000? If you want to save some money, I would go with the Asus m50 series fitted with the 9600m gs (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220366). If you're willing to spend more, I would go for either the Dell Xps m1530 or the Asus g50 (fitted with the 9700m gt - http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G50V-A2&Category_Code=). If I had the money, I would definitely go with the Asus g50 as it has an astounding 500gb. Since you like to watch movies and play games, the extra space could come in handy.

Many consumers who have similar needs have at one time, found themselves having to decide between a Dell Vostro 1720 and the HP Pavilion DV7-2180US. It's always recommended that potential buyers take the time to study laptop models and compare them to each other. Their pros and cons would have to be weighed in order to come up with a decision that you won't regret.
Dell Vostro 1720
Designed for small business users, the Dell Vostro 1720 has features that at a glance would tell you what an entrepreneur's main tasks are.
First of all, the Dell Vostro 1720 has a liquid crystal display that measures 17 inches. It has a resolution of at least 1440 by 800 that allows the user to find multitasking to be easier since many windows can be opened at the same time.
Connectivity is a must for everyone in the business world. The Dell Vostro 1720 has six USB ports that could be used for data transfer, or for added external devices such as printers, extra keyboards, webcam, etc. Due to its ExpressCard/54 expansion slot, eSATA ports can be installed too. The laptop also has an SD media card reader.
To secure the information on the laptop, a fingerprint reader and hard-drive encryption are featured. These security features are highly valuable in business.
The only thing missing on the 1720 that we believe is essential is an HDMI port. What this means is that the consumer won't be able to view the HD content in an external HDTV set. Since the 17-screen inch is large enough for HD display, then this might actually be a moot issue for some.
Hewlett-Packard DV7 2180US
An obvious difference between the two laptops being compared right now is the gaming capability of the Hewlett-Packard Pavilion DV7 2180US. With a 17.3-inch LCD screen, the user is given sufficient detail for optimum experience in playing games. In addition, the HP DV 2180US's 64-bit Windows Vista operating system allows full access to memory. Complicated gaming operations such as 3D display processing can then be accomplished easily.
The HP DV7 2180US boasts of having an HDMI port, which can be used to connect to an HDTV display. The 6 USB ports that the 1720 has just can't be matched by the HP laptop, which only has two ports. The HP DV7 2180US has an eSATA port that's useful for connecting to external hard drives. The 1720's ExpressCard/54 expansion slot is just not sufficient. The HP DV7 2180US also has a 5-in-1 media card reader, which gives the ability to read different compact media formats. The 1720 has a disadvantage as it could only read SD.

Dell Vostro 1720
When it comes to security features, the 1720 is a clear winner due to its encryption option and fingerprint reader. Trade secrets have to be protected in order to preserve the business. The transfer of information can also be done quite conveniently with its many connectivity options.
The 1720 loses when it comes to graphics capabilities since it cannot process 3D graphics and the DV7 2180US can.
HP Pavilion DV7 2180US
As mentioned in the preceding paragraph, the HP DV7 2180US is remarkable due to its edge when it pertains to 3D graphics.
Connectivity of this laptop leaves much to be desired. Having only two USB drives is a glaring shortcoming that the maker should address. It has the basic connectivity ports but it doesn't have the 5-in-1 media card reader, which is disappointing.
Conclusion:
Notebooks are designed according to what type of tasks the intended user has. Having said that, we think that the HP Pavilion DV7 2180US wins in this face-off since it has enough power to allow more applications to be run. While the 1720 just isn't as powerful, it would be an appropriate fit for the businessperson who can't be bothered with games.
