Why is my Dell XPS m1210 stuck at "trickle charging" the battery?

I've been having a bunch of problems with my battery/charger lately. I cannot get the battery to fast charge no matter what. And the little LED light says that my battery is low and discharging, despite the fact that the battery thing/icon on my screen says I'm plugged into AC power. What is wrong here?
I cannot run on AC power alone, with no battery, the computer will start to boot up for about 2 seconds then cut out and off.
I have two different batteries, the original Dell one that is not recognized as installed/in my computer when it really is (screen icon says using AC power instead). The newer non-Dell one will accurately show up on my power management, but I cannot fast charge the thing.
Please help, I'm in the middle of final exams and I need to use my laptop!
