What's a good brand to buy?

I'm going off to college this fall and I'm going to purchase a laptop.

Lenovo or HP.

Dell and Gateway aren't very reliable. Dell uses very low quality parts, and Gateway is just Gateway. Their products haven't been that good for a while. Acer is another brand that's very low quality, but that's mainly so that they get into that magical pricepoint that people are looking for (the under $500 laptop crowd).

Toshiba and Sony are more reliable than either of those, but they typically price their laptops a lot higher than they are worth, especially Sony. I wouldn't buy a Sony unless it was way cheap and then I'd be really skeptical about it's quality.

If you want a decent laptop, that'll be able to do what your asking and not cost an arm and a leg would be the Lenovo IdeaPad Y430 - 278183U or Lenovo IdeaPad Y530 - 405162U. Both are pretty good, and they aren't extremely expensive (in fact they're under $700 for a good one). Considering that Lenovo has a superior build quality, it's definitely a good buy. If you can find a good HP that's comparable to either one of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y Series above that you like, then I'd say it's okay.

Also, since it's for college, have you considered contacting the college you will be attending and asking them what they recommend? Some majors will be more inclined to using a Mac (such as the Fine Arts), while others won't be as inclined. They may also have a recommendation of what to buy, which can be very helpful. Other than your college recommending one, there's really very little point in buying a Mac (all the security-related reasons are really bogus, if you use your Windows laptop in a smart way).

Also, I'd just like to point out that it's kinda funny that some people will swear by a laptop, and then can't spell that laptop's name. Just thought that was funny...

Is there something that will protect my laptop so I can put it in a regular messenger bag?

Instead of buying a laptop case, I was wondering if there is something I can buy that will act as a laptop protector/case that I can then put in my regular messenger bag instead of having to buy a new bag and find a way to carry all my other stuff. Is there such a thing? Where can I find one?

Check out www.sfbags.com - they have something called a sleeve case that may work for you. I ordered one with a flap and loops for a strap. They don't get in the way when I put it in my bag, and when I want to travel really light, I just attach a strap and carry the sleeve itself. They're on the expensive side, but I've had and used mine for almost four years now, and it's as good as new.
