Adapter Power Cord

Notebook hard drive to IDE adapter, plugged power cord in backwards?

have a notebook to IDE HDD adapter and accidentally plugged the power cord in backwards. It corrupted my desktop's master hard drive and would not boot into XP, but I was able to run chkdsk on another machine and fix the problem. However, my notebook hard drive cannot be recognized anymore in either machine. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Weird. I've plugged those things in backwards before and nothing happened. Maybe yours is broken. Be careful. I had one catch fire before. (I was doing something stupid at the time . That doesn't happen during normal use...usually.)

Make sure you have the adapter where the power is on the left as you look at the drive with the label up and the circuit board down. There might be a triangle or an arrow on the top right side of the connector or a 1. When its plugged in, there will be a group of 4 pins on to the right of it. The power would be on the opposite side.

When you attach IDE cable, you should see the red stripe nearest the power cable connector.

When you you plug it in and power up the PC you should hear the drive spin up. Your adapter may have a drive light on it.

When you go into windows, check it under disk management.
Right Click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management

You should see it there. If there is no partition, then you would have to use a 3rd party utility to get the files back. Or you can just create the partition and format it as you like if you don't care about lost files.

If there is a partition, you might have to assign it a drive letter. If that doesn't work, you could run CHKDSK on it and see what happens. Or delete the partition and create a new one.

One other thing. It will be the Master drive by default. You might just unplug the CD ROM and plug it in there. I believe the 4 extra pins can set it to slave with a jumper, but I can't remember. I don't have one in front of me to check at the moment.

Presenting from your laptop is one of the the most common practices among business presenters. And if you use your computer to project PowerPoint slides, or connect live to the Internet, or use multimedia, there are certain precautions you should take. Here are seven tips or safeguards to help ensure everything goes smoothly for your next business presentation.

1. Bring a back up of everything. Whether you are presenting in a meeting room down the hall from your office or in a hotel 1,000 miles away, play it safe and have seconds of everything. This includes a battery for your laptop, a second set of ethernet cables or power cord, disks etc.

2. Never assume it will be in the room. Did you really think that the maintenance staff would leave you plug adapters, pointers, extension cords etc. In large hotels and conference centers, you can probably get what you need, but never assume. Just to be safe, bring your own. And if you own a Macintosh computer, be sure you bring your own adapter to connect to the projector; most AV staff usually don't stock Apple gear.

3. Back it up! Besides the file on your desktop, copy your presentation to a small USB flashdrive, and if you have online storage (like MobileMe or X Drive) keep a copy in the cloud, just in case.

4. Check out the room in advance. Arrange to be in the room a few hours before you present. That way you can run through the deck and check to see if Mr. Murphy's law is going to kick in.

5. Think twice about a live internet connection. Many presenters today like to connect to the internet and show a live video or other online resource. Did you consider what would happen if the connection went down (it does even for companies like Apple and Microsoft when their executives present). For example, if you want to show a YouTube video, why not just copy the video to your desktop and play the copy,..it's much safer and it has no impact on the audience.

6. Have a designated second computer. What would you do if your computer froze for an hour or just died, right there on stage? Have a friend or colleague accompany you and copy the file with your presentation to their desktop, that way if you need a second PC, you have one waiting in the wings. And if you are travelling, ask a staff member at the hotel or conference center to act as your back up.

7. Know your on-site technical support. If you are presenting in your organization, get to know an IT support person and be sure they are on call when you are presenting. At a conference center or hotel, get the know the AV team the night before and walk thru a few possible "what if" scenarios just in case.

Being overly prepared and thinking through all the possible problems will ensure your presentation is a success, most importantly, the preparation will give you added confidence, and that is worth its weight in gold!
