Oil being the lighter liquid, floats on top of the water and is only 0.1 mm thick, and it appears to shine like a rainbow. Oil needs some sort of residue like sand, silt or algae to sink in. However, there are some special oils like the ones used for burning in electric utility plants which are much heavier than water and so they sink.
When this oil reaches the water body, it sits tight on the surface of the water, thus cutting off oxygen supply, and the fishes start to die. Thus the Clean Water Act of US has planted the responsibility in each private and public business entrepreneur's hands so that they use the proper spill response mechanisms to treat the harmful wastes before throwing them away.
There are several oil spill absorbents that are used to soak up the oil form the wastes. They absorb the hydrocarbons like gasoline, lubricant oils and fuel oils. These oil absorbents are manufactured according to the purpose that they are intended to serve. There are several types of oil absorbing pads and rolls. Some of them are mentioned below.
• Universal Maintenance Absorbent Pads:
Being made of melt blown polypropylene sorbent and lint-free spund bond fabric, these pads generally come in the color of gray. They can be used for daily bitty tasks like oil spills and repairs. Along with oil, these pads can sponge in water based fluids too. You can wring out the oil to reuse these pads over and over again.
• Economy Oil Absorbent Pads and Oils:
It is made of hydrophobic oil and has a stacked weave design that gives it a larger surface area and therefore makes it more effective in soaking up oil and oil-based fluids spills. They are white in color that will help you to know if they are completely soaked with oil. They are mainly used for water and land oil spillages
• Anti-Static Absorbent Pads and Rolls:
These are mainly used for the extra protection in areas of oils spillages where sparking is a possibility. They are the melt down polypropylene pads made of one layer of oil that absorbs all the hydrocarbon and chemicals. They are also used in dry, low humid areas to clean up highly volatile fuels.
• The Boat Bilge Boom:
These are poly skins encased in mesh sleeve and filled with polypropylene. They are highly absorbent, and since its outer covering has two layers, they will not sink. They are mainly used in boats to clean up engine oil or any other hydrocarbon chemicals that can come in its way.
These oil absorbent pads and rolls are highly efficient in cleaning up the toxic elements in the environment, and ensure that the water that sustains life on earth remains untainted and fresh.
