How can you recharge your iPod's battery?
I know that Apple will take them back and replace the battery for almost as much as the original device costs. Anyone have a tried-and-true way to charge it yourself?
I understand your question to mean "can you replace a failed iPod battery yourself?".
The answer is yes.
You can buy replacement batteries from ebay together with the tools and comprehensive instructions.
However, it is not as easy as you might imagine.
It is possible to damage the dock connector in opening the case. The battery is glued to the iPod so you may need to force the old one out.
I would recommend using a 3rd party service to change the battery.

I often write about the dual sim, iPhone clones. Recently, I received an email which asked "what are the real differences between the SciPhone and the iPhone? Which is better?" I'll try to answer this question in the following article, as well as go over some of the features of the SciPhone.
Dual Sim, A Removable Battery, And Bonus Features: One of the major differences between the two phones is that the clone allows for two sim cards. This means that you can have two phone numbers or two carriers. It's popular to use one sim for a cheap talk plan and another for data or the Internet. Prepaid GSM cards work fine on this phone which can end up saving a lot of money. You aren't forced into any long term contract and you can use whatever GSM carrier that you like or that works for you.
Additionally, the SciPhone has a removable battery which frees you from being tied to the manufacturer. The original phone requires you to have the battery removed and replaced by the manufacturer.
Finally, the clone has FM radio and the "shake and tilt" feature which the original does not. Shake and tilt means that you can advance MP3s and songs by just flipping the phone with your wrist. Likewise, you can take the picture from portrait to land scape or to wide screen by just tilting the screen.
Now onto what the iPhone has that the clone doesn't. The clone can hold up to 8GB of memory. The Apple can hold up to 16. Also, you can't go to the apps store with the knock off However, the Sci does have Java support which has literally thousands of free applications and downloads. I'd argue that many things in the apps store are also available via Java.
Similarities: Obviously, there are a lot of similarities between the two phones as the knock off is modeled after the original. These phones look very much alike and it is hard to tell the difference when held side by side. They both have the over sized flat screen with the finger touch interface. Both allow web browsing (and moving around the site using only your fingers, messaging  (MMS, SMS, email), MP3 / MP4, digital camera and web cam, and Bluetooth. You can transfer data and sync the phones via USB, Bluetooth, or the SD cards in the phone.
Cost: Probably the most persuasive things that draw people to the SciPhone is price. You can often get this phone for around or under $100 and you can use whatever cheap carrier that you like, as well as prepaid or pay as you go. My son uses this phone for usually under $20 per month, including Internet, talk and messaging.
So, what's the bottom line? If you're heart is dead set on the iPhone, you're probably going to be satisfied with nothing less. As good as the clone is, it isn't the original phone. However, if you want the original features without the high cost and the commitment, the Sci is a really nice alternative.
