Do i have a fried motherboard?

I have an IBM & i used my friends gateway charger. It charged for like 3 minutes and it stopped charging. Now when i have the correct kind of charger for it, it wont charge or power up at all. Is it the motherboard? If so, how can i get it repaired?

It may be the power supply. It may also still be under warranty. You should check with where you got it. They should be able to tell you the best place to take it for repairs.

Before continuing, I want to be honest and say that a friend of mine actually purchased this HT. However, we spent quite a few hours together trying to translate the contents of the Wouxun manual to be made "satisfying" and apply it to the "strong function, stable behavior and easily operate" HT.

An exact excerpt from the Wouxun Web site: "Established in 2000, located in Quanzhou city Jiangnan high technology industry zoon. Quanzhou Wouxun Electronics Co. Ltd is the professional developer, manufacturer and marketer WOUXUN brand serial wireless interphone, intercom battery, battery charger etc, communication apparatus. Since establishing ,we have offered the countless new products of communication of high quality and at a reasonable price to the ...". I never knew that "professional companies" establish themselves in the "zoon". So much for the "professional company's ability" to afford English translated spell-check software.

When the box arrived, it was marked "TOY" on the outside. We both began to wonder if that is how shipment of these and similar radios are able to bypass FCC regulations and TYPE A acceptance. I feel that the radio should be treated as a toy and used only as a receiver. Personally, I would not want to jeopardize my FCC license by transmitting with one of these "toys".

Wouxun Kg-669 HTNow that the company background and my personal disclaimer is out of the way, I'd have to begin by saying the general feel of the radio is good, rather solid actually and far better than we anticipated. Delivery took about 10 days and the purchase included a desk charger, belt clip and hand strap.

The first feature (feature?) one might want to change is the rather annoying female voice mimicking your every move. Changing this "feature" from Jiangnan dialect to accented English makes it tolerable, at least to a point. In my opinion the translated voice sounds much like a 15 year old girl with an accent and fully clogged nasal passages. In reality, after the novelty wears off, I'd just disable it, even if that required heating up the soldering iron. Next I should mention that the advertising is deceiving and you may get the impression that these are "DUAL BAND" radios. Look over this "feature" list and note the "Output power" description:

One begins to notice things that seem rather odd. Scrambler mode (which requires an optional chip) and FM radio. The impression I get here is that these radios are most probably used on job sites for scrambled two way communication. I have visions of various "groups" here in the US and other locations around the world buying up bunches of these "toys" with the optional scrambler chip, then transmitting god knows what type of messages on the 2 meter band. I just hope it's my own personal paranoia and that it never actually becomes reality.

Be careful if you do decide to key up transmitter. In our area some of the police frequencies are above the Amateur 2 Meter band allocation and the radio is fully capable of transmitting there as well. Programming the 669 was difficult. Together, I'd say we have a combined experience of 25 years buying and selling a very long list of equipment. But, this "toy" sadly beat us into submission. No matter how many times we went through the skimpy and horribly translated user manual, we were unable to get the memory channels properly loaded. As it turned out, programming the repeater output, input, CTCSS tone, repeater splits independently and then storing ALL the information into the selected memory channel is how to beat the memory storage problem! Oh yes, just one more thing as an example of "toy" status; Switching the radio between "frequency mode" (VFO) and "channel mode" (Memory) requires powering the radio off and then on with the menu button held down.

In conclusion, for a few more dollars, go out and purchase a brand name mono-band radio which you know is FCC type accepted. Get yourself an easily understandable user manual and avoid being annoyed by the design flaws and silly features of a "toy".

Original Battery Toshiba

Why is my laptop charger not working correctly?

A few weeks ago, my original laptop charger died. I know the problem was with the charger and not the battery, cuz I tested it with my sister's charger and it worked. So I ordered a replacement charger that is compatible with my laptop, (Toshiba Satellite A135 S2276) and it worked perfect for a few days. Now though, most of the time when I plug the chod into the laptop, the light goes on but the computer doesnt recognize it as charging. It only recognizes it when I first plug the charger into the laptop, then into the wall. What is the problem, and how can I fix it? Or is it just better to buy ANOTHER charger, this time directly from Toshiba( even though Id rather not, cuz its way to expensive)

It might be best to just get the Toshiba charger... It's more expensive for a reason (you get what you pay for.)

Although my friend's laptop did the same thing where it wouldn't charge and his motherboard was fried and he had to send it out for like a month to get it fixed.

My laptop wouldn't charge, but that's because the plug that goes into the wall had broken off (leaving one of those little prongs in the outlet) it was a disaster.

When Windows Vista was about to be released a few years back, everyone was clamoring to be the first in line to get their hands on it. After all, its initial release had already been delayed for year, and the released pictures of Vista's desktop were strikingly different from the monotonous shades in Windows XP. So it was to the disappointment of many when Vista didn't live up to its expectations. Now that Windows 7 is nearly here, the same kind of buzz is hanging in the air. But will Windows 7 really live up to its name?

Well, it seems that this time, Microsoft has finally started taking the rants of its customers seriously. Their recently released beta has garnered much support from its one-time critics, and as initial tests have shown, Windows 7 seems to be better than its predecessor in almost every way. From cleaner interfaces to faster load times, the newer operating system is gaining a reputation as being what Windows Vista was intended to be.

After so many false starts with Vista, Microsoft was more than happy to blow its own trumpet over its recent success. As part of its marketing campaign, Microsoft claimed that Windows 7 utilized new technology to optimize power consumption in PCs shipped with it. To prove its point, it ran a performance test on two identical laptops running Windows Vista and Windows 7 respectively. The test involved playing DVDs on each laptop's optical drive repeatedly until the battery gave out.

During the demonstration, the laptop which ran Windows Vista was measured to consume about 20.5W of power, while the one with Windows 7 ran at 15.6W. The movies were looped until the batteries reached 0%, and at the end of the test, it was obvious which operating system had won. The laptop with Windows Vista only lasted a meager 4 hours and 6 minutes, whereas the unit running Windows 7 managed to last 5 hours and 25 minutes. That's an extra 1 hour and a half of playtime!

It's not sure whether the test was performed under completely fair conditions, but official figures from multiple reliable sources put battery-life gain on laptops running Windows 7 at a minimum of 11%, as compared to laptops with Windows Vista. Among the reasons given were that Windows 7 launches fewer applications at start-up, reducing the drag on power consumption, and that device drivers were loaded in parallel on 7 as opposed to in sequence on Vista. Whatever the reasons, it's pretty exciting for casual users and tree-huggers alike - and good news for suppliers - as battery life performance on laptops remains one of the highest factors influencing purchasing decisions.

Laptop Notebook Carry

What notebook/laptop would you most recommend? (brands, too)?

I'm looking to buy a laptop or notebook, and don't know very much on picking a good brand.
I would like something with a lot of storage, and GREAT quality! Something cheap, but not too cheap (if you know what I mean!) Internet access would be really great, too! I like to make movies (AMV's), so it'd be nice to be able to play and make videos. I also would like it to be easy to carry and maybe sleek. Can you help me out? What do you use?

I haven't seen any decent statistics on laptop reliability so I can't say with any actual authority which brands are good and which are bad (and it doesn't seem like even the people who do so have any real support for their positions) and generally the competition keeps them all pretty much alike in terms of features and price. One other thing that needs to be kept in mind is that all laptop brands have bad models should be avoided, a quick google search can you tell you if a particular model is trouble prone, a few negative comments aren't that much of a problem (every company produces duds occasionally and there are also bad users that abuse the product and then blame the manufacturer) but if you find almost everyone saying that it has failed on them it's probably a model to avoid.

The first thing you'd need to do is determine what specifications you need, for movie editing you'd need lots of RAM, try for 4 GiB (RAM is cheap, it might even be cheaper for you to buy less with the computer and upgrade) but don't expect to be able to use all of it (3.2 GiB you should be able to get use of) due to technical reasons about the way memory is allocated to things other than memory (although a 64 bit OS may be able to see all of it if your chipset can do memory hoisting, the current Intel chipsets can do it).

Easy to carry would argue for a 14" screen with 15.4" being at the upper limit and you could probably go a bit smaller too down to 13". Above that the laptop becomes too big and heavy to be conveniently portable and below the ergonomics and performance gets comprised pretty severely.

Whether you need a dedicated graphics chip or whether integrated graphics junk can fill your needs will depend on whether you do anything with 3D, if you don't play 3D games or use specialised applications that require 3D performance than it makes sense not to spend extra for decent 3D performance (although I should warn you that if you get integrated graphics you won't be able to upgrade away from it to something better like you can with a desktop).

In terms of other components, the best mobile processor is the Intel Core 2 Duo with the older Core Duo (if you can find it) along the AMD Turion good choices if you can't afford the more expensive Intel processor. Hard drives you can just buy the biggest you can afford (5400 rpm is fine, 7200 rpm is faster but sucks up more power and generates more heat).

If you have any particular ergonomic preferences those can play a factor (e.g. like one laptops keyboard better or prefer a pointing stick to those stupid touchpads or want an analog volume wheel instead of push button volume controls) and may end up the deciding factor.

This model measures at 10.4 x 7.6 x 2.9 inches and weighs at just 2.9 pounds. The external casing of this model has a matte surface as opposed to a glossy fingerprint-magnet surface. This is a refreshing change of design among the other popular netbook models in the market. Generally it has a pretty slim and sleek design. The only thing that bugs me is the protruding 6-cell battery on the back. The thick frame/bezel around the screen is also a little distracting. This model is available in a variety of colors.

Features & Performance: Typing on the Toshiba Mini NB205 netbook takes a little time to get used to, but once you get the hang on it, it feels pretty comfortable to type on. The mouse track pad was also very spacious with huge click buttons. Toshiba claims that the netbook can last up to 9 hours on one charge. The last time I used it without plugging in the power point, it lasted about 7 hours, which was pretty impressive. This netbook was quite speedy. The audio quality from its speakers was only mediocre. Despite its flaws, the Toshiba Mini NB205 netbook is all in all a pretty decent netbook and may prove to be a formidable competitor to other popular models in the market.
