What state should I store my notebook battery in when I'm not using it?

I am getting a new battery for my notebook (Dell XPS M1530) soon, I was wondering what charge I should store it in while I am using AC power. I really don't want it to die sooner because of this.
I have read 10-15% in some places, 40% in others...
Ideally, if you knew you would not need battery operation for awhile, you would remove the battery when it was discharged to the 40% to 50% level and store it in your refrigerator! The trick is of course, knowing when these times are, because when you want to grab it and go again, you'll probably want more than a 40% charge on your battery. But with some advance planning (and charging), it could be done, and you would get a longer battery service life than most of your contemporaries. However, if you need battery power every day or two, this regimen obviously won't work out.
Lithium-ion batteries are different than most people's experiences with rechargeable batteries (often based on early nickel-cadmium battery performance), and do not particularly benefit from "full" charge/discharge cycles or other issues that other battery chemistries have. For all their benefits, though, the downside is that they will probably only last a few years no matter WHAT you do.
