When Apple introduced the MacBook back in 2006, it gave the world an Apple laptop that would soon become the company's most popular model. In fact, Apple maintains that the MacBook is the best-selling computer in the company's history, no small feat. So, it stands to reason that Apple would give the now low-end model a major makeover for the upcoming holiday season.
When you place the new MacBook and the previous model beside one another, you'll immediately notice some minor aesthetic differences. The new model is a unibody construction (polycarbonate), so there are no "touches of gray" as with the last model. As a result, the new MacBook is really, really...white. We're talking Barry Manilow white. The new unibody MacBook also has, as you'd expect, fewer screws thanks to its new construction.
Another significant difference is the new glass Multi-Touch trackpad that offers gesture support. As with any significant change, it might take some getting used to, but once you do, you realize why Apple spends so much of its budget on R & D. Other relatively minor changes include a smaller power button, more solid and quiet keyboard keys, and a round (as opposed to square) iSight hole.
While the 13.3-inch display has the same 1280 x 800 resolution as the previous model, the unibody MacBook uses LED backlighting, like the displays found on the 13 inch MacBook Pro, which results in a far brighter output.
If you're a fan of the Apple Remote (you're probably not), then you'll be upset, because it's missing. Also gone is FireWire, though the absence on the low-end model is more forgivable than Apple's previous omission of the interface that it itself invented. The display connection is a MiniDisplayPort, as opposed to the mini-DVI connector it replaced. Also missing in action is the lack of an SD slot, curious since the MacBook is targeted at consumers primarily. There's also a single audio port that shares analog and digital output as well as line in. Other ports are the MagSafe, USB 2.0 (x 2), gigabit Ethernet, and a Kensington slot. Still standard is an 8x SuperDrive.
Another major change is to the bottom of the machine, and it's bound to have both admirers and detractors. The bottom of the new MacBook doesn't have the traditional padded feet. In fact, it doesn't have any feet at all because the entire surface is simply one huge rubber foot itself. So, gone is the ease of RAM and Hard Drive upgrade that was part of the MacBook experience from the beginning, though you can take off the bottom and replace them if needed, so they're still user-replaceable. However, the new bottom is much less prone to slipping. There's also no user-replaceable battery, but you get a far-improved battery life, so there's a lot of trade-offs involved.
The new MacBook still has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, now at 2.26GHz. The RAM ceiling is still set at 4GB. Bummer. Regarding the graphics, the unibody MacBook still uses the Nvidia GeForce 9400M that shares 256MB of RAM with the main system memory. Keep in mind, though, that the new MacBook supports 1066MHz DDR3 RAM, which is faster than the 800MHz DDR2 RAM in the previous model.
Having taken the new MacBook for a quick run-through, we can say that Apple's target audience (consumers and students) will likely be pleased with the new unibody MacBook. If you need the expandability of FireWire, faster graphics, more RAM, and an SD slot, then you're going to need to fork out an extra $200 for a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro. However, the sub-$1000 price is very attractive and will likely make the MacBook one of Apple's best-selling machines for quite some time to come.
